Date presentation: Display format prompt

It seems odd that the presentation option to "Display format prompt" is only available when "Display calendar control" is checked.

I would like to show the user to enter a date in mm/dd/yyyy format but that is only possible if the calendar control is shown.

Is there any way around this that I'm missing?

The format is shown automatically only when the calendar is shown as well. However, you can always add the prompt manually:
a) You can do it by specifying description for the attribute (in presentation) - tick "underneath the control" option
b) You can add HTML cell to the form and display the prompt there
